Comedian Mel Buttle Is Off The Leash For The Brisbane Comedy Festival "IndyWatch Feed Seq"

With an ever-growing list of gay comedians around the country, Mel Buttle is not one who immediately springs to mind. Shes kept her six year relationship with partner Sophie separate from her public life, allowing her to build the solid foundations of a career based on her own professional merits. Michael James sat down with ...

The battle of black and colour Gabe Feathers McGee

Black was ruthless This was not a friend but an enemy, absorbing all colours, pretending to protect but leaving each shade weak and puny, hidden in the depths, breathlessly submissive, dormant the colours rested, exhausted but dogged and resolute, waiting for light to penetrate the dark shield. Then light came a dawning realisation of hope []

Did Bowie predict the Valentines Day Massacre? tanja stark

Did David Bowie predict Floridas Valentines Day Massacre in 2015?

When this song was released in 2015 many saw in this piece a treatise for gun control.  While a benevolent interpretation,  I saw nothing of that. Instead I saw a man channelling the dark unconscious impulses that perculate in society and manifest, if not managed wisely, in hideous suffering both for the mental health of the perpetrator and the victims of their projected rage:  teddy and judy down the teachers and the football stars.

Bowie was a visionary artist, deeply into Carl Jung and often manifested the darker side of our collective unconscious, the troubled part of the zeitgeist,  in his work.  Ive written at length how and why here.

While Bowie may not have strictly predicted the massacre strong intuition and logic would presume Valentines Day is always going to be a deeply troubling day to disturbed schoolboys with a vendetta his work is undoubtably prescient and none the less chilling in its capacity to express the darkness of our repressed shadow, and the forces which may seek to exploit it.Like most creative visionaries, psychosis and death were always closely entwined within his oeurve.

Curiously, Jungs star is on the rise again, much like it was amidst the sixties counterculture movement.  The death of Bowie, the avowed Jungian,  brought many of  his ideas to fore as people searched deeper into the layers of symbolism and archetypal imagery surround his last works and death.

Now, several years later Jordan B Peterson has burst onto the public stage, bringing mythos back like its the new black.

This is both  strangely curious and unsurprisingly inevitable.

The principle of enantriadromia holds that whereever there is an overabundance of one force, there will be a compensatory balancing with its opposite.

Jungian Bowie sings of multiple personae and telling lies, of the inauthentic Self and the magic of chaos.  His primary archetypes are the Magician, the Trickster, with a latent archetype of the Sage/Senex.   He has always had a core psychological obsession with the symbolism of the mannequin.

Jungian Petersons speaks of getting your house in order, the supremacy of truth, authenticity and bringing order out of chaos.  His primary archet...

Black Rheno The Zoo

Black Rheno
The Final Cut Tour

Supported by:
Lavidius, Dirty Brew, F.U.C & The Royal Attillery

This March catch Black Rheno taking on their most ambitious headline tour to date with a massive
national tour hitting all major capitols plus a few extra towns in between. As the tour name suggests, this
is the final Black Rheno tour off their debut EP release Lets Start A Cult before the band comes out swinging with their first ever long player later in the year.

With 2017 seeing the guys share stages with a host of heavyweight national and international acts such as
Napalm Death, King Parrot, Iron Regan, Psycroptic, Darkest Hour, Brujeria, Lock Up & Ringworm the
guys are not slowing down heading into 2018 with this huge run of shows and an album in the works.
Black Rheno have certainly made a name for themselves in the two years since the bands incarnation,
packing an undeniably huge wall of sludging grinding grooving sounds from the Sydney 3 piece.
Combined with one hell-raising live show as the band takes to the stage tearing everything to bits while
their frontman craws his way across the stage and in and out of the crowds, its completely confrontational
yet somehow insanely engagingly funny at the same time. Its this mix of a hell for leather and good times
approach that has given Black Rheno such a strong following in such a short period in the Australian metal scene.

Screamfeeder The Zoo

SCREAMFEEDER

With special guests:
DEAFCULT & Lexicon

Theyre the band you grew up with, whose songs are imprinted into the DNA of every music-lover who came of age in the 90s and 00s. A band of eternally-youthful fuzz-pop darlings who, however improbably, have continued to play together for over 25 years and somehow have not only gotten better, but have become even more loved. A band that combines loud with beautiful, intense with joyous, chaotic with precise and pulls it all together in a way that very few acts ever manage.

2017s surprise comeback album, Pop Guilt, was rapturously received by fans and hailed by critics as one of the bands best; it made ripples around the world, the new songs reconnecting people with the bands peerless back catalogue. Rolling Stone summed it up thusly: 25 years into their career, Screamfeeder are still killing it.. (they) pour a lifetime of indie-rock experience into this collection of blissed-out punk songs.

Theyve toured Australia too many times to count, as well as the US, the UK, New Zealand, Singapore, Japan, France, Germany, Switzerland and Spain, taking audiences on the ride that is uniquely Screamfeeder. Live, theyre a non-stop whirlwind of high-energy heavy riffs, caterwauling feedback and pulse-racing bass, Tim and Kellie entwining their vocals around the music, all anchored with the explosive power of Deans drumming. This band can give anyone in the world a run for their money theyre raw, grungy, fiery, effortlessly skilful yet loose at the same time, an exuberant and joyful wave of music filling every room with pure radiant youth, and theyll be doing it all over again as they hit Adelaide, Melbourne, Brisbane, Sydney and Hunter Valley in 2018.

Theres more news to come about Screamfeeder in 2018. Watch this space

Burger Lite: Back from the dead Cheeseburger Gothic

Dragged my worthless arse back to the gym today. I haven't exercised since mid-December. In my defence, I did manage to pick up a case of something called 'walking pneumonia' just before Christmas and have only just got the all clear from my doctor last week. It was a helluva thing. Hacking, coughing, spluttering, fever, chills, the whole ninety-nie snotty yards, for seven weeks.

I did a couple of courses of antibiotics, none of which seemed to help. In the end it sort of just burned itself out. Funny thing is, I'm still coughing. The doctor told me that my body has forgotten how to stop. Been taking some cough suppressant trying to give myself a break from it.

I got into a pretty good groove before all this too. I'd just finished the second bar of my brown belt grading for jujitsu. The ladies were travelling overseas. Apart from looking after Thomas all I had to do was write some words and look after myself.

Anyway, seven weeks later, I haven't stepped on the scales yet but I feel like I'm about three or four kg heavier.

Took it pretty easy today, on doctor's orders. Just half an hour on the elliptical trainer and a pretty mild session at that. I felt fine afterwards. We'll see how I shape up tomorrow. I'm really getting to that point in life where, when I put weight on, it really wants to stay.
