Brisbane Walls Graffiti and Street Art "IndyWatch Feed Seq"

The Art of Graffiti Writing

This is the final draft of the forward I was invited to write for a new book by Brisbane photojournalist, Toks Ojo. Toks has photographed and collated a vast amount of current graffiti/street art in Brisbane into Brisbane Walls, Graffiti and Street Art. The book is due for release later this year.

OJO_20170520_M3360

2018 will mark 20 years since I began an alchemists experiment with graffiti. I invited graffiti writers into a conservative enclave to publicly demonstrate their art. It was a bold and maybe nave move but it was the beginning of Jugglers, at that time a bi-monthly celebration of fine art, music, graffiti, comedy, poetry reading and coffee in, of all things, a north Brisbane suburban church context.

I was the minister of a large protestant congregation and I had begun feeling deeply frustrated with its sterile and utilitarian approach to the arts. Not only that church but the whole religious paradigm and its dualistic approach to life, spirituality and subsequently, art had become stuck. I needed a push through the door that was opening.

Jugglers effectively became my wide open door out of the restrictions of that paradigm into a new life where graffiti would feature as the writing on the wall and the metaphor for a new l...

THIRSTY MERC The Zoo

15 years ago, Thirsty Merc bounded onto the music scene with their Summertime sounds, making their mark on radio and TV over the ensuing years and to celebrate this milestone, the band are heading back out on the road on their Take Me Back Tour kicking off in Brisbane on 2 November.

Thirsty Merc formed in Sydney in 2002 releasing their debut EP, First Work, in September, 2003, before being signed to Warner Music.  The bands big break came in 2004 with the release of their debut, self titled, album which included the hits, Someday Someday and In The Summertime (the theme for Bondi Rescue since 2006).

Two more studio albums followed Slideshows in 2007 (#4 ARIA Album) and Mousetrap Heart in 2010 (#14 on the ARIA Album chart) which included radio staples, 20 Good Reasons, Mousetrap Heart and Tommy and Krista

Fast forward to 2015 Thirsty Merc released Shifting Gears, their first wholly independent and first new material in five years and spent the next few months crossing the country; running up thousands of Frequent Flyer points and sold out shows.

Besides the hits, the Take Me Back Tour is a celebration of all the music along the way and fans can expect to hear songs theyve never heard the band perform live before.

Lead singer, Rai Thistlethwayte, said today: Its thanks to the fans that were still here, loving life and music, 15 years later and this tour is a big thank you to everyone whos sung along with us over the years, as well as a great opportunity to dust off some songs weve never included in our shows.

Tickets for Thirsty Mercs Take Me Back Tour shows are on sale NOW.

Shifting Gears is out now through MGM Distribution
